Hotteok is a flour dough pancake filled with sugar syrup inside, it’s crispy outside and inside is filled with sweet gooey indulgence. It’s one of the most popular street snacks in Korea. Hotteok tastes like a bready pancake filled with cinnamon sugar.

Typically, they are stuffed with dark brown sugar, cinnamon powder & some grounded nuts or seeds but in recent times savoury style pancakes (vegetable, Kimchi, Bulgogi or cheese etc. stuffed) are also available. It really smells and tastes heavenly. It’s stuffed with sweet gooey syrup.

Eomuk 어묵 - Fish cake

Eomuk is a processed seafood product made of ground white fish and other ingredients such as potato starch, sugar and vegetables. In Korea, fishcake is one of the popular ingredients, used for soup, side dish and. Especially, "eomuk-tang", served on a skewer in broth, is a very popular street, which people of all ages love.

Korean Summer fashion

With summer just around the corner, we’re shedding layers and incorporating colour and fun silhouettes into our looks. Take cues from the Korean fashion trends as the industry is gaining a solid reputation for being fashion-forward.

Tennis Skirts: Tennis skirts aren’t a Korean style anymore as they exist almost everywhere. You can easily spot people wearing them on the streets of Seoul in summer. Although these skirts reached their peak popularity a few years back, they are still a great asset for any closet.

Puffed Sleeves: This fashion trend certainly adds a sense of elegance and luxury to otherwise ordinary apparel designs. Puffed sleeves have grown popular among Korean celebrities and have swept the country. This style is currently trendy in both dresses and shirts.

Street Style oversized fits: Since 2021 and also in 2022, oversized shirts and baggy pants (either jeans or chino or leather pants) have very much been in fashion in Korea. Regardless of the gender, you can decide to wear an oversized polo top and slim pants or simply do the reverse.

Bucket Hats: The bucket hat is one of the major Korean fashion trend in 2022. What makes the bucket hat so popular in South Korea? Well.. Aside from the fact that this bucket hat was popularised by Korean celebrities, the bucket hat is famous because it blends in perfectly with any kind of fashion you opt for; be it street style or just casual wear.

KPOP songs can comfort us in an overwhelming manner. They have a special way of crafting words that resonates with what you are feeling. It can remind you that it is totally okay to feel what you are feeling, and you’ll get through it.
If you are low or need a pause in your everyday life, put on your headphones and listen as these songs embrace you.

One of South Korea’s most successful solo artists, IU has released an impressive and versatile catalogue of music.  “Everyday With You” is a calming acoustic ballad, and IU’s emotive vocals narrate the desire to be with one’s significant other and share every moment together. This song is the ideal soundtrack for dozing in bed on a spring morning as dew blankets the grass outside.

Song: Everyday With You
Singer: IU

"Streets that get wet with the dawn rain
The fiery sky with the evening sunset
All of the things that surround us
I want to share with you"

While “Spring Day” is one of BTS’ most well known songs, “You Never Walk Alone” is an underrated gem. The gentle, haunting string instrumentation at the beginning of the song builds into powerful rap and vocal verses, illustrating a journey of hope and healing. “Spring Day” feels stuck in a winter that won’t end, wishing desperately for spring to come, but “You Never Walk Alone” brings a spring characterized by hope and promise.

Song: A Supplementary Story- You Never Walk Alone
Singer: BTS

"I want to fly though I have no wings
But your hands become my wings
I want to forget the dark and lonely things
Together with you
These wings sprouted from my pain
But these wings are going towards the light
Even if it's tiring and painful, I will fly if I can
Will you hold my hand
So that I won’t be afraid anymore?
If you and I are together
I can smile"

The two make a light and innocent vocal duo, imbuing Spring Love with a harmony so cute it’s nearly saccharine. Wendy takes the lead, with Nam supporting every lyric in a softer, more passive tone. Them together gives off this happy tune, which the song is trying to portray

Song: Spring Love
Singer: Eric Nam & Wendy

"Be my spring, I'll always be your flower
I hope we can melt each other and open each other up
Our heart to heart that wasn't visible before
Now we're facing each other
The hidden flower is finally blooming
I think spring has come"

SHINee’s Jonghyun is well-known for his songwriting abilities and his talent as one of the group’s main vocalists.
Jonghyun’s tender earnest voice is a welcome transition into spring after a harsh winter. Simple guitar accompanies the studio version, with piano accompanying the live version, both adding a feeling of romance and longing to the song. It’s fitting for relaxing on a spring day with a bedroom window open to let the sunlight in.

Song: 1000
Singer: Jonghyun

"Hug me, lean on my shoulder
Have strong trust in me, you know that saying?
I know even though you don’t say it
That is very touching but
Please tell me even if you know"

The enchanting vocals that accompany this vibrant instrumental makes “Midnight” a stunning melody that can calm you in its own way while you take a leisurely night walk in the park.

Song: Yours
Singer: Raiden X Chanyeol (ft. Lee Hi, Changmo)

"I’d like it if time stopped here
I’d like it if time stopped here
Because our time together tonight honestly isn’t long
It would be nice if time just stopped entirely, yeah"

She can even link the dreams of two people together, and use this ability to play Cupid for her students. But her matchmaking goes awry when she enters the dream of Si-u Park -- a lucid dreamer, who realizes that Yeoreum is walking into his dream. Si-u and Yeoreum’s lives become intertwined after this incident, weaving a tangled web of love, friendship, and dreamers at Hanseo High.

I am standing under the cherry blossom trees on a sweet spring day in Yeoui-do taking in all the sights around me - the water, the trees and the people. And then it finally sunk, the reality of being in Seoul.

Flashback to 2016 when my Hallyu journey began with Korean music, specifically artists like IU, BTS and Seventeen. Listening to their songs, I was awed by how musically beautiful and expressive a language could be. IU's rendition of 'Autumn Morning' gave me a sense of being at home, filled me with warmth even though the song was in a language I couldn't understand without translation. That is when I decided that I had to learn Korean with the hopes of reaching a day when I wouldn't need any translations or subtitles and could take in every word and sentence of my favorite songs, just the way they were, in their most vivid forms.

And this single desire took me through a roller coaster ride spanning around three years of Korean classes taught by the most wonderful teachers, meeting like-minded people with similar interests and   competitions that helped me polish my skills at every step. Devoting long hours to this passion made me realise that I wanted to do more with this language than only learning it during the weekends as a hobby. And that's when I decided to take the next big step of teaching Korean language - bringing to reality my childhood dream of teaching. Bringing my two passions of teaching and learning Korean language together have brought me immense happiness - and what is more wonderful is the fact that both of these things are so interconnected. As I teach I learn more, and as I learn I become more capable of teaching well.

Now, keeping aside the details of my teaching journey, back to the present, in Seoul.

Through the King Sejong Institute Foundation Scholarship (which is awarded to a small group of 10-12 students across the world every year based on the annual King Sejong Worldwide Speaking and Writing Competition), I got the opportunity to study Advanced Level Korean Language and Culture at one of Seoul's most premier universities and Korean language institutes and I am immensely honoured and humbled at the same time.

The move to a more global classroom taught by accomplished teachers has only increased my passion in and love for Korean language. And interacting with the people I meet on a daily basis in the city has been eye-opening - many people often ask questions about India and are quite often taken by surprise when I say that India not only has great opportunities to learn Korean language but has thousands of people seeking to learn the language. I have also been spending more time taking in the culture around me, experiencing different aspects from the rich history to food, from music to theatre. And of course, while there is a lot to see, explore and enjoy, there are also quite inevitably, difficult aspects for which I would need to work on and improve more on. All in all, my Hallyu Story has been a long and continuous journey - a mix of exploration and experimentation on one hand and consistency and patience on the other.

On my final note, to all the readers, if learning Korean has been on your mind for some time, I would say, get on it now! It is never too late to start as long as you are ready to give it your time, effort and patience. And as the language opens up to you slowly, you will not only be able to understand more of what you watch and hear and but also express yourself better and better with every single time. And the joy which one is filled with in this process, is one that comes quite rarely in life.

Learning Korean with Music
(Si-jag by Gaho from the K-drama Itaewon class)

I can fly the sky
Never gonna stay
내가 지쳐 쓰러질 때까진
어떤 이유도
어떤 변명도
지금 내겐 용기가 필요해

Translation:

A new start is always exciting
Feels like you can overcome anything
Like a clock hand that chases after time
You want to keep going forward
Crossing the line that has been drawn
Toward that life
Sometimes, there will be resentment
Saying not to cross that line

I can fly the sky
Never gonna stay
Until I faint from exhaustion
No matter what reason
No matter what excuses
I need courage right now

Words:
 새로운 시작 (Sae-ro-un Si-jag) : Fresh start
앞지르다 (Ap-jireu-da) : Pass/ Outrun
이겨내다 (Igyeo-nae-da) : To overcome/ To survive
용기 (Yong-gi) : Courage
삶 (Sam) : Life

<Spontaneous Balance>

Korean Cultural Centre India is delighted to invite you all to an art exhibition “Spontaneous Balance”. The exhibition encourages Korea-India art exchange for the audience to experience.

The exhibition will be inaugurated on 22nd March, 2022 (Tuesday) at Baek Nam June Hall, after which it will be open to the public from 23rd March 2022 (9:00 AM - 6:00 PM IST) onward, until 20th May 2022.

Spontaneous Balance is an exhibition featuring artworks by two distinct artists, Jang Hee Mun and Shobha Broota, who show abstract expressions of reality through two diverse backgrounds and experiences. Their works are a subtle reflection of their cultures and experiences. Through their individual viewpoint, they use the balance and spontaneity of shapes to portray the world's order and disorder.

The artists’ works belong to two different cultures and traditions, however, both their works appear to be characterised by spontaneity. While Ms. Broota focuses on the portrayal of order as the true essence of beauty and devotion, Ms. Mun uses a direct and pure artistic approach to the raw aspects of reality.

We are happy to announce our first physical exhibition since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The details of the exhibition are as follows:

Inauguration: 22nd March 2022

Public Viewing : 23rd March 2022 - 20th May 2022
